For the past 35 years, the Bronx, New York City, has played a major role in the exportation and transformation of aerosol art and artists. From its beginnings as “tags” on walls to colorful names and vibrant characters on subway trains, to Style Wars and canvases sold overseas, aerosol art has spawned a new generation of artists, given a new dimension to mixed media installations, and has had its effects felt everywhere from Fifth Avenue to Hollywood. Music groups don colorful CD jackets designed by aerosol artists. Advertising agencies take out ads and display them on sides of trains and buses as yesterday’s aerosol artists did their art 35 years ago. And graphic designers dip into the playful and vibrant letter designs of aerosol artists.
